Airports

A random collection of art installations or other points of interest, at airports across the U.S.:

Deborah Butterfield horses Princess Pine, Lyon, and Silverfork (cast bronze) on NE Airport Way, installed 1995 at Portland Int'l. They love to nibble on fresh apples, carrots, or celery from intrepid travelers! Princess Pine and Lyon used to graze the opposite (north) side of Airport Way, eventually wandering to join Silverfork on the other side where I suppose there must be better grass. These horses are also upset about ongoing construction.

Governor Victor G. Atiyeh, also Portland Int'l - residing at the international concourse named after him (gates D10-D15 atrium) since 2009. Strangely, he was obscured behind a wall when last I was there. An agreeable AND easy-to-approach fellow, worthy of much better treatment no doubt...

New departures lobby and main terminal building at Portland Int'l, opened late-2024 and affectionately referred to as "The Garden." Much of it is still under construction, thus passenger flow should hopefully make a lot more sense circa-2026. Still, imagine a world where mass destruction DOESN'T need to occur in order to create a new paradigm. Just ask Concourse A, the Clocktower Plaza, Stanford's Restaurant and Bar, regional gates E6-E7...

A nice map of PDX-as-we-knew-it, from roughly 2006. THIS is the airport that the whole world knows, and loves... Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do.

"Sky's The Limit" light sculpture by Michael Hayden, installed 1987 in the concourse connector between B and C gates at Chicago O'Hare Int'l - Terminal 1. Essentially unchanged since then and still going strong, albeit George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue isn't played quite as prominently as it once was.

Placard midway through (found between moving walkways, on the south side if I'm not mistaken) speaks for itself, and "Expressly for United Airlines" offers a level of prestige.

Stunning United Airlines Club, Chicago O'Hare Int'l as well near gate C10 - Terminal 1. Opened in 2023, no better way to refresh (or nap) after getting in on a red-eye flight around 5:30 AM...

B gates at Chicago O'Hare Int'l has a great club near gate B6 - located upstairs, it offers plenty of seating with spacious views of the concourse.

At the opposite end of the concourse, you'll find another club near gate B18. Positioned downstairs, it's slightly smaller however open the latest out of any of the 5 x clubs (!) at ORD. Say hello to Donna behind the bar for me, should you venture there!

Connector hallway between Terminal 1 B and Terminal 2 E gates at ORD, with some pretty lighting overhead. Terminal 2 (E and F gates) are primarily United Express, although nowadays quite a few mainline flights use these gates as well.

A rare tulip in bloom at ORD.

Another brilliant United Club, this time at San Francisco Int'l near gate 80 (some call it F11) - Terminal 3. Cool nautical theme!

The other United Club at San Francisco Int'l, near gate 60 (E4 if you absolutely must...). Not as big and as nice as the nautical club - it's just what you get used to, albeit a better view of aircraft. There is technically a 3rd club too, over in the international terminal and open later.

The "new" (opened in 2014 - not really new anymore, I guess) United concourse at Boston Logan Int'l, Terminal B2. A true metaphorical AND literal bridge between relics - connecting the former American Eagle concourse (now demolished), to the former U.S. Airways Shuttle concourse (now housing American Airlines). Gates B27-B29 used to be in the TSA lobby - now "split" with B27-B28 in United's concourse, and B29 in the neighboring concourse home to Alaskan, Southwest, Spirit, Boutique, and some United flights.

Dedication placard, in the rebuilt connector hallway between TSA and said concourse.

Superb United Club upstairs too, near gate B24!
